Young florists needed for World Skills

Do your trainees and students have what it takes to be named the best in the UK?

Then why not fast- track thier careers with WorldSkills UK Competitions.  You see the British Florist Association (BFA) and WorldSkills UK are looking for talented people from across UK Floristry as they launch their Skills Competitions for 2020.

Putting ‘employees’, ‘apprentices’ and ‘students’ practical skills, knowledge and employability attributes to the test in a competitive environment, WorldSkills UK Competitions are designed by industry experts and are free to enter. Participation in the competitions is proven to enhance an individual’s career prospects with 90% of entrants saying that they had seen improvements in their career prospects after taking part.

Sandie Griffith, National Floristry Competition organiser on behalf of the British Florist Association said; “Participating in WorldSkills competitions provides opportunities for competitors to develop critical skills, attributes and behaviours valued by employers such as problem- solving, self-reflection, time management and the ability to work under pressure. All vital skills in today’s floristry environment”.

Each successful entrant that makes it through the National Qualifiers, taking place between April and June 2020, will proudly represent their college, employer or training provider in the National Finals held at WorldSkills UK LIVE. Attracting over 70,000 visitors, WorldSkills UK LIVE is the UK’s largest skills, apprenticeships and careers event which takes place from the 19 – 21 November at the NEC, Birmingham.

Celebrating the best of UK talent, national and even global recognition could await entrants as WorldSkills UK looks to invite those apprentices and students who excel in the competitions to join its talent development programme for the international WorldSkills Competition in 2023. Known as the ‘skills Olympics’ WorldSkills takes place every two years and sees over 1000 apprentices and students from around the world compete in over 50 different skills, including floristry, with the aim of being named the world’s best.

Ben Blackledge, Deputy Chief Executive, WorldSkills UK said: “WorldSkills UK Competitions are proven to enhance apprentices’ and students’ technical and employability skills, giving them the confidence to excel in their chosen career.”

Entry criteria
This is an individual competition
There is no limit to the number of entries per organisation
Whilst there is no stipulation about the level of floristry required to enter, competitors MUST be familiar with the core competencies (these can be found in the 'Useful Information' section below) and MUST NOT have more than 5 years industry experience.
Competitors must have a high standard of basic techniques such as wiring, taping and construction methods together with an understanding of how to apply these professional standards in practical work.
How you can take part
Register to enter this competition from 2 March to 2 April 2020.
Competitors will then be asked to complete a passive task– details will be available at registration.
Competitors will be invited to a National Qualifier during Spring/Summer 2020
WorldSkills UK quality assure the qualifier results and finalists will be notified by July 2020
Finalists will participate in the UK National Final at the NEC in November 2020 as part of WorldSkills UK LIVE
