Miley Cyrus helps Lidl sales

According to a press release on the Lidl media hub the release of Miley Cyrus' recent breakup anthem, Flowers, has caused a massive uplift in flower sales at their branches.  Honestly, in a press release issued on 30 January 2023, Lidl said:

Lidl has seen its flower sales flourish by an impressive 52% in the two weeks since Miley Cyrus’ hit ‘Flowers’ and its empowering self-care message was released on 12th January.

The female empowering anthem, which soared to the top of the UK and global charts and broke listening records with 203 million streams, reminds listeners to treat themselves to a bouquet instead of relying on others to do so. The first line of the chorus, “I can buy myself flowers”, has been echoing across the nation for two weeks - and it’s clearly had an effect.

The song has inspired shoppers to ‘love themselves better than anyone else can’ with Lidl’s fresh flower range, which starts from 99p.

Other highlights in the range include a Deluxe Bouquet for just £5.99, Rainbow Tulips (£4.99) and Bumper Spray Carnations (£3.99), or for a true show of self-love, Mixed Fairtrade Roses (£4.99).

For a small touch of “to me, from me”, Lidl also offers Daffodils (99p), Tulips (£2.25), Roses (£2.49), Chrysanthemums (£2.59) and more.

Alongside ‘writing their names in the sand’ or ‘taking themselves dancing’, shoppers can pick up Lidl’s flower range in stores now, while stocks last.

Now we at The Florist Trade Magazine can’t help thinking this is a very opportunistic press officer leaping on the bandwagon as not quite sure how the facts can be evidenced unless they disclose their accounts/sales figures year on year nor, if we’re being honest, do we really think every heart broken woman would head to Lidl! If it was us, given we are girlie reporters, we’d be treating ourselves to something a little more luxurious as heartbreak deserves the best.

However, it does remind us (because we are also very long in the tooth industry girlies) that there used to be a Flower Council of Holland PR campaign called Why Wait … Buy your Own. Now that is something we can get our heads round and an idea we quite like the idea of bringing back … watch our Good Florist Guide pages to see how we do.

In case you don't know the tune watch it here ... it's actually very good!

Flowers

Miley Cyrus

We were good, we were gold
Kinda dream that can't be sold
We were right 'til we weren't
Built a home and watched it burn

Mm, I didn't wanna leave you
I didn't wanna lie
Started to cry but then remembered I

I can buy myself flowers
Write my name in the sand
Talk to myself for hours
Say things you don't understand
I can take myself dancing
And I can hold my own hand
Yeah, I can love me better than you can

Can love me better
I can love me better, baby
Can love me better
I can love me better, baby

Paint my nails, cherry red
Match the roses that you left
No remorse, no regret
I forgive every word you said

Ooh, I did not wanna leave you, baby
I didn't wanna fight
Started to cry but then remembered I

I can buy myself flowers
Write my name in the sand
Talk to myself for hours, yeah
Say things you don't understand
I can take myself dancing, yeah
I can hold my own hand
Yeah, I can love me better than you can

Can love me better
I can love me better, baby
Can love me better
I can love me better, baby
Can love me better
I can love me better, baby
Can love me better
Oh, I

I did not wanna leave you
I didn't wanna fight
Started to cry but then remembered I

I can buy myself flowers (oh)
Write my name in the sand (mmh)
Talk to myself for hours (yeah)
Say things you don't understand (never will)
I can take myself dancing, yeah
I can hold my own hand
Yeah, I can love me better than
Yeah, I can love me better than you can

Can love me better
I can love me better, baby (oh)
Can love me better
I can love me better (than you can), baby
Can love me better
I can love me better, baby
Can love me better
